Los Angeles to Train Armenian Journalists

The city of bright lights and fake breasts is out to do some good.
...the program is organized on the initiative of American Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau for journalists from cities-friends.

According to the press release, Armenian journalists can participate in the program, because signing of the agreement on declaring Yerevan and Los Angeles cities-friends is scheduled for February 2007. The program is designed for journalists with experience no less than three years. Applications for participation are accepted until February 9, 2007.
Certain people from a certain blog should attend this training course. Perhaps then they will learn about plagiarism and its consequences.

Time Magazine Europe Apologizes to Armenians

Thanks to my aunt for bringing this to my attention. Here's the story:
The Feb. 12, 2007 issue of the European edition of TIME magazine -- available in newsstands throughout Europe as of Feb. 2nd -- carries a full-page factual announcement on the Armenian Genocide, along with a complimentary DVD, in English and French, which contains a compelling 52-minute documentary on the Armenian Genocide by French director Laurence Jourdan. The DVD also includes a 46-minute interview with Dr. Yves Ternon, a leading expert on the Armenian Genocide.

Both the DVD and the full-page ad were provided free of charge by TIME Europe (circulation 550,000) after realizing that its staff, without proper review, had inserted in the June 6, 2005 issue of TIME Europe a Turkish DVD as a paid advertisement under the guise of promoting tourism to Turkey. The Turkish DVD, paid for by the Ankara Chamber of Commerce, was a deceitful attempt to spread malicious lies and denialist propaganda on the Armenian Genocide.
Sponsored by the state, no less.

I can't say it is generous of the magazine, as it took them over two years to do something about it, not to mention the fact that they would include such material to begin with without ever checking the content. It really is the least that they can do, but the fact that an informative and historically accurate depiction of the genocide is presented is a big plus for our cause.

Turkish Daily News Writes in Armenian

Can someone check on hell and see if it has frozen over?
Turkish Daily News, one of the most influential newspapers in Turkey, issued an article titled in the Armenian language "Goodbye Hrant, we are all Armenians" (Mınasparov Hrant Polorıs Hay Yenk). The article was dedicated to the funeral of Hrant Dink.

"Tens of thousands of mourners gathered for a last farewell to murdered journalist Hrant Dink in Osmanbey, one of the central districts of Istanbul where he was shot in front of his newspaper's office building, Agos," the newspaper says.
This could be the beginning of something good, but only if we do not forget that we still have a stained past with Turkey that must first be addressed and resolved.
