And the Votes Are In

Election day came and went. Conclusions?
The ruling Republican Party of Prime Minister Serzh Sarksyan won almost 33% of the vote, officials said. Prosperous Armenia, a comparatively new political party led by former world arm wrestling champion Gagik Tsarukian, won 14.7%.

European observers said the vote largely met international standards, but that some more work was needed. Opposition groups said Saturday's vote was falsified and have called for mass demonstrations in the capital, Yerevan.

The BBC's Matthew Collin, in Yerevan, said the results were a resounding victory for pro-government forces. A spokesman for the Law-Governed Country Party, Tigran Mkrtchyan, said the results were "grossly falsified".
I don't think anyone expected anything other than this. The Big-2 fixed the election, just as everyone knew they were going to. Did they mess with the ballots? Maybe, maybe not - but they certainly bribed a large number of the population with scholarships, seeds, food, money, and so on.

I think the words "vote" and "Armenia" should be prohibited from being in the same sentence, especially with the results of this election.

This is what happens in a young democracy. It happened in the US during the mid 19th century and continued into the 20th century. This is nothing new. People need to stop expecting perfection out of Armenia's democracy.

And I am glad Sarkisyan won. Hayastancis are intelligent and culturally savvy, but Karabaghtsis are born leaders. Plus Armenia isn't willing to make the same mistake as another Ter-Petrossian. Did we all forget about the burning books and cutting down trees from the streets of Armenia to use as firewood. Our GDP is up consecutively since Kocharian took office. The standard of living has drastically improved, but people want to criticize because he is putting a little cash in his own pocket...Who cares..Every world leader does it one way or another. We live in the US and Bush is sucking us for every gas dollar we have, because his cronies will fill his pockets in the future. That is life it isn't perfect and neither is anyone else. As long as it continues to improve than I consider Kocharyan a huge success. Time will show us that him and Sarkisyan are a great duo. Go Armenia!!!
