Azerbaijan's Entire Economy Set to Collapse

As you probably know by now oil prices have plummeted, resting near the $40 a barrel mark, and expected by some to slide further still. According to Google, and disregarding increased production for the sake of simplicity, Azerbaijan pumps out about 800,000 barrels of oil a day. That's quite a bit even by today's numbers, amounting to something like $32,000,000/day or about $11.5 billion dollars a year in an economy with a GDP of about $53 billion a year. That's a staggering 20% of the production from oil. But wait, the $53 billion figure could be off, as the 2008 average price of crude was $100, give or take, thus Azerbaijan could have a shortfall of about $17,000,000,000. And with all the crisis, Aliyev still wants to continue spending money that it does not have, as evidenced by their $2.5 billion debt, though likely much more now, in his ultimate wet dream to equal his military spending to Armenia's GDP.

And all this when more Azeris than Armenians live on less than $2 a day, even with the fact that Armenia has zero oil and an economy roughly less than one fourth the size.

So, should we call the bookies?

Drilling for Oil in Armenia

I think it is fair to say that Armenians have been jealous of the vast oil resources of its neighbors for quite some time. Perhaps envious no more!
...the agreement allows prospecting on half of Armenia's territory adjacent to Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia, the states rich in oil and gas. "We suppose the south of Armenia has similar potential."
Then again, a lot of oil-rich countries have become lazy vis-a-vis business development. Too much reliance on any one resource will do that to a country.

Here's hoping some oil is found, if for nothing else other than bragging rights!

Gazprom to Build Oil Plant in Armenia

I should note that it seems plans are not yet finalized, even though some sources make it seems as if they are. Let the pollution begin!
Gazprom Neft Russian company announced the intention to build an oil processing plant in Armenia. The capacity of the plant is supposed to make 7 million tons per year.

The plant will be located at the border of Armenia and Iran, the supplier of the stock. A new pipeline from Tebriz will be laid for the purpose. The processed stock will be delivered to Tehran via a railway that doesn’t exist yet, reports Kommersant daily.
Can't join in the railroad project with the Kars-Gyumri line? Team up with Russia and Iran and build a whole new line and make barrels of money! Smart thinking.

Turkey to Send Oil, Gas, Water to Israel

Wonder why Israel has no opinion on Karabakh? Wonder why the Jewish lobby is against the Armenian Genocide resolution? You can add one more reason to the list:
Turkey and Israel have tentatively agreed on building a network of pipelines to ship oil, natural gas and water from Turkey to Israel...Under the project, a pipeline already carrying Russian natural gas to Turkey will be extended to deliver supplies to Israel, the ministry said. The deal was reached earlier this month...

The oil shipments to Israel would be delivered through an extension of either an existing Iraqi oil pipeline to Ceyhan or one that Turkey is planning to build from Samsun to Ceyhan to export Caspian oil, the ministry said. Turkey would also build a new fresh water pipeline to carry Turkish water from the Mediterranean region to Israel.
There's one of your answers to a hundred questions. We must tackle Armenian issues now before they become impossible later.

Profile: Calouste Gulbenkian

Calouste Gulbenkian
1869 - 1955

Calouste Gulbenkian born into an illustrious Armenian family in Scutari, Turkey. The oil baron got his start in England: he studied petroleum engineering at King's College London and immediately thereafter went to the oil-rich Middle East and opened it up to the world; he was also instrumental in founding the oil-giant Royal Dutch/Shell. Gulbenkian was the main architect behind the Turkish Petroleum Company, which was created in 1912/1914 so that the biggest European oil companies could explore for oil in Iraq: this would also ensure that other firms would be kept out, thus greater profits for the participants.

From all of his business endeavors, Gulbenkian amassed an incredible fortune, which he used to build an amazing art collection. His collection is now housed in a museum in Lisbon, Portugal, and includes rare and treasured art, some dating back nearly 4,000 years; When he died, a clause in his will created the Gulbenkian Foundation, whose activities are in the fields of arts, charity, education and science. The foundation also awards an annual Gulbenkian Prize of £100,000 to a museum or gallery in the United Kingdom for "track record of imagination, innovation and excellence".

Did you know?
Gulbenkian is very well known as "Mr. Five Percent" because he had a 5% interest in the Turkish Petroleum Company, which he put together. It may not seem like a lot, but it was enough to make him a multimillionaire and reportedly the richest man in the world for many years!
